Western Birds Poster
Project type
Illustrative Icon Design
Project Overview: The poster was created with the objective of designing a visually engaging and thematic piece centered around a series of icons. I chose the theme of "Western Birds," showcasing various bird species found in the Western United States, with a western, rustic aesthetic. The project involved combining iconography with a concept that communicates the essence of the Western U.S. wildlife.
Deliverables:
- Final Poster Design: A high-resolution, print-ready poster showcasing the Western birds, delivered in both PDF and AI (Adobe Illustrator) formats.
- Icon Set: A set of individual bird icons, exported as vector files (AI, SVG) for potential future use or further projects.
- Mockups: Visual representations of the poster displayed in real-world environments (e.g., framed on a wall or on a bus stop) to demonstrate its versatility and impact.
- Color Palette & Typography Guidelines: Documentation of the color palette and typography used, for consistency in potential future designs or brand application.
- Presentation Slides: A set of slides summarizing the design process, concept development, challenges, and final solution, showcasing the project’s evolution from idea to completion.
Challenges & Solutions:
Challenge 1: Simplifying Complex Birds into Icons
Bird species are complex, and simplifying them into icons without losing their distinctive features was a significant challenge.
Solution: I focused on the most defining characteristics of each bird, such as beak shape, posture, and wing structure, to distill them into visually simple, recognizable forms. I experimented with different levels of abstraction to ensure the icons were both effective and easily identifiable.
Challenge 2: Achieving Visual Cohesion with Multiple Icons
With several bird icons and a detailed Western theme, the challenge was maintaining a sense of cohesion throughout the poster.
Solution: By using a consistent color palette, similar line weights, and balanced spacing between the icons, I was able to create harmony in the design. The restrained use of textures and the integration of typography helped unify the icons with the Western aesthetic.
